Future Forest Fund’s Costa Rica program integrates an innovative combination of science-based restoration with native species, carbon-locking biochar, strong local partnerships, and innovative climate finance.
By channeling global climate finance resources and working with strong local partners we enable farmers to build their local economies while providing invaluable climate mitigation and creating diverse and complex forests.
The target areas around the provinces of Cartago and Limon are typical of degraded pasture areas that are found in many areas of tropical Latin America. FFF has developed an afforestation model that consists of a mixed-species forest design to maximize sequestration of carbon, expand habitat for endemic wildlife species, and generate employment opportunities for local workers.
The project will include benefit-sharing agreements to ensure the local community benefit from the project and the latest recognised MRV capabilities to keep stakeholders are continually informed on the project’s progress. The program will be certified and registered through the Gold Standard’s Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) methodology to ensure carbon credits meet globally recognized standards.
The area of degraded pastures in the nations of tropical Latin America is typically more than 20% of total land area and there is potential for replication of this methodology in Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil.
